Of course, the internet being what it is, there are always going to be a few people looking to take your money while shipping you inferior merchandise, or worse, no merchandise at all. While these "dealers" are in the minority, you still need to be careful when purchasing Cisco equipment on ebay. In this article, I'll give you several tips on browsing ebay ads for home lab ideas, and a few things to look out for when purchasing equipment on ebay.

For those of you just starting your Cisco certification pursuit, the idea of purchasing a home lab kit -- a set of routers, switches, and perhaps some cables and study guides -- seems like a good idea. Instead of putting your lab together one piece at a time, these kits allow you to get a head start on your studies.

One thing to watch out for in these kits is outdated equipment, or the inclusion of outdated study guides. Often, vendors will use these kits as a way to get rid of unwanted inventory.

The Cisco 1900 family of switches falls into this category. A recent search on ebay for "ccna lab" showed seven different CCNA lab kits that contained 1900 switches. The problem here is that the current CCNA exams do not test on the 1900 switches, which are menu-driven and do not have an IOS. You'll need to be well-versed with switches that do have an IOS, such as the 2950s.
Tip! The items must have pictures unless it is a service that is sold on eBay. If there is no picture, then the items is probably not there.

The plus side here is that you will probably save money by using 1900 switches. If you're on a tight budget, having a 1900 switch is better than no switch at all. If at all possible, though, get a Cisco switch with an IOS.

The cables and transceivers included with these kits are generally exactly what you need to set up that particular kit, and this can be very helpful to those CCNA candidates who are new to the various cables needed to physically configure a home lab. Just make sure you're not buying a kit with 10 transceivers (used on AUI ports) when you've only got two routers with Ethernet ports.

Watch out for kits that include outdated study guides. I've seen four-year-old CCNA books included with some kits. If you already have your study guides, feel free to ask the vendor how much the kit costs without the books.
Tip! When a customer does not adhere to the 'Terms and Conditions' in your eBay ad, it normally escalates into an eBay email battle. No one wins on this one - it drains your emotional state and wastes time.

That leads me to the most important point. Get to know the vendor before buying anything. Visit their website and check their ebay feedback. If buying from an individual as opposed to a reseller, find out what conditions the router or switch has been kept in, and make sure to define the terms under which they will accept returns. There's nothing wrong with buying equipment from someone who's selling their CCNA/CCNP/CCIE home lab, but just make sure you ask the right questions first. Professional resellers generally have their return policy right in their ebay ad; if they don't, ask for a copy.

Over the years, I have been amazed at the "blinding" greed and reckless approach to commerce that some business owners have employed. Lying to customers, selling inferior merchandise, and not offering refunds, left a firestorm of irate customers in their wake. Without fail, all of this "ill will" led most businesses to bankruptcy, and in some cases, Federal Prison.

I realize that not everyone engages in "business criminality" that rises to the level of fraud and incarceration. Most people try to be good stewards, and approach their enterprise in an honest and forthright manner. For those of you who own thriving business concerns you already know that in most cases the customer is always right. You make sure that you communicate effectively, refund monies if the buyer is truly unhappy, and try to meet the needs of the people who buy your goods or services.

However, there are more than a handful of Ebay sellers that are of the mind that customer service and effective communication is not something that they need not participate in. Take the case of a woman named Barbara, (Nickname: BobAnn) who recently posted her disappointment on the Ryze Business Network:

And while I have never had anyone use "Buy It Now" by accident, I have had several people over the years ask me to retract bids. The number of people who have made that request can be counted on one hand! Some, did not even understand the process, (bid retracting) and I was more than willing to guide them through it.

People make honest mistakes, and you should never "abuse" a buyer for doing so. If you plan to get into Ebay auction selling for the long haul, always practice good will toward your customers. Unless someone is totally unreasonable, and you have done everything in your power to accommodate their request, never deny people the ability to change their mind, return an item, or retract a bid! Developing good will also requires that you anticipate customer needs…..

For instance, I had a few overseas customers bid on a wireless router. This particular item needed to be powered with a Universal Adapter, since voltage requirements in France and Australia are obviously different from those here in the United States.

I made this abundantly clear to both bidders before they sent me any payment. The purchase of such an adapter, not to mention the shipping price, would have doubled the US retail cost. I told them that they could probably get the product cheaper at their local electronics stores. Without hesitation, I let them out of their obligation to pay for the item. I then contacted the next highest bidder and offered that person the chance to make the purchase.

Both bidders thanked me for my honesty. They had forgotten about the electrical differences. I could have ignored that little detail, and sold them the item anyway. "Flame" wars are not pretty. I have seen a lot of unnecessary back and forth "banter" that could have been avoided, if they (the seller) just resisted the urge to make their "two cents" known. Sometimes it gives customers the impression that you are more concerned about arguing, then conducting your business.

I have also witnessed seller feedback that has included some pretty foul language. Engaging in this type of verbal sparring is not much of a confidence builder either. It is more telling of what you are, then about revealing the sins of your customers. Don't go out of your way to register a negative response if you can help it. Heed the sage advice that our Mother's use to tell us: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!"

Communication with your customers should not amount to the sound one hand clapping! Bottom line, if someone e-mails you with a question--answer it! Here is an example of the type of feedback I obtained by doing just that……

The gentlemen who left this positive review, wanted to know about some of the particulars of a "Mickey Mouse" clock I had up for auction. His wife is a collector of all things Disney, and thought it would be a nice surprise for her birthday. The clock, to say the least, was in sad shape. It was incapable of keeping time, and the only part of it in working order was the second hand. I thought for sure that he would be disappointed with the item despite full disclosure of all of it's imperfections.

To my surprise, not only did I receive positive feedback, but he also told me that his wife absolutely loved it! In this instance, one man's junk, truly, is another man's treasure! I never thought this item was worthy of any praise! The time it took to answer his questions—all of five minutes!

In real life, if a person came up to you and promised everything like that you would naturally figure it to be a scam and not pay attention to it. So why don't people do the same on ebay? It's because these auctioners are crafty, they often times provide you with tables of potential sales and usually state things like "If you just make 5 sales a day, you'll earn $3900 a month!". This is what ropes most people in (and by most I mean inexperienced or first timers). Little do they know that getting 5 sales a day is a feat.

Unestablished Sites

Very few of those auctions will say how many visitors they currently get, or more importantly they wont state their conversion ratio. Sites that aren't currently getting any visitors or sales are called "unestablished" meaning that they aren't marketed at all, which means once your suckered into buying one of these sites, the sole burden of marketing (believe me, its a heavy one) will rest on your shoulders.

Before I go on, I must say one thing, most auctions now include the word "established" in their title just to attract people, often times this is not the case. Most "unestablished" sites I mentioned before that you will see on ebay are most likely "cookie cutters". What are cookie cutter websites? They are sites merely "generated" by someone slapping a different domain name on a template. That means they'll take a graphic image, stuff it with the same content and just slap on a different name for example one being www.cookiecutter.com which looks exactly the same as another one the seller is auctioning off like www.cutcookie.com. Buying a cookie cutter site is a sureshot way of failing in the online business world (and its what most new people do).

As counterintuitve as it sounds, the more specific your service or product is, the better. Sites that are unique or sell a unique product are called niche sites. A highly targeted niche product will do two things, one, it will ensure that the people who are likely to buy your product will only have you to turn to and two, you will be ranked much higher in the search engine because you'll be the only one or one of the few to sell what you're selling.

The answer is basically the opposite of what I've said so far, you want auctions that state upfront the number of visitors to their site in the current month or last month etc. You want a auction where the seller states the conversion ratio of the website (how many people actually bought the product out of the people who visited) and also you want the seller to be open about how much money the site makes (not "can" make). Also be sure that the site is not a cookie cutter and is actually unique in its design. Follow these guidelines and chances are you'll certainly end up with a good profit turning website on your hands.

Growing Up

Omidyar was born in Paris in 1967. He moved to Baltimore when his father began his term of residence at Johns Hopkins. Omidyar became captivated by computers while at high school and skipped his gym classes in order to use it. Noticing the boy's keen interest, the principle gave him the job of creating a program that would produce catalog cards for the library. He was paid $6 an hour.

At Tufts University, Omidyar worked on a program to assist Macintosh programmers with computer memory problems. His request that users of this shareware file pay on the honour system did not bring many replies; the cheques that should have been going to fund his years as a computer science undergraduate went solely to paying for the post office box.

In 1991, Omidyar went to work with three friends to create pen-computing programs. Though Pen computing was a dismal failure, the e-commerce site (eShop) on the Web site that Omidyar introduced and operated enticed Microsoft to buy the company.

Starting The Business

Omidyar went to work with General Magic, a software company, in 1994 and made extra money designing Web pages on the side. The girl he was dating at the time, Pamela Wesley, who would later become his wife, collected Pez dispensers and often complained how difficult it was to meet others passionate about her hobby on the internet. Thoughtfully, Omidyar appended a small online auction to his personal website so Pamela would make contacts with other collectors as well as buy and sell.

eBay (electronic Bay, as in the San Francisco Bay area), as it was when it first appeared in 1995, operated merely as a forum for people to sell and bid on various items. Omidyar did not back goods, mediate conflicts, or get involved if there were accusations of dishonesty or abuse of the system. Almost immediately, collectors of Barbie dolls, Beanie babies and the like flocked to eBay.

Three months after its launch, Omidyar had to ask his friend Jeff Skoll, also a programmer, for help. In order to cover the new costs involved with the growth of the business, Omidyar began charging small change to list an item on the site and took a small commission if the item was bought.

At such a rate of growth, Omidyar and Skoll sought venture capital assistance and a management team that would further move the company forward. Benchmark Capital gave the partners a $4.5 million cheque for 22% of the company. Benchmark also found a CEO for eBay, Margaret Whitham, an executive from Hasbro, and with her leadership, the business became a slick corporate entity. With a new look, better publicity, and greater organization, eBay went public on September 24, 1998. Within four months of trading, the stock, which started at $18 per share, was worth $300. Omidyar became a billionaire.

There are many others from the same stable, some of which may yet sink mid Atlantic, so don't be surprised to see offerings such as Car Boot Challenge, Car Booty, Sun, Sea and Bargain Spotting and, in what must be a classic case of product placement, The 20th Century Antiques Roadshow. Given that Americans have so little history in the traditional sense, the latter seems tailor made for them. Time will tell. Much the most intriguing development in recent times, however, has been the decoration of a four storey Manhattan townhouse with items acquired on the eBay site. Eight leading designers were given two months to furnish the property and web surfers were invited to follow their progress on eBay. This concept cleverly combined an appreciation of antiques in the context of home design and demonstrates a grasp of a changing market. People evidently enjoy this subject but TV executives are generally formulaic and unimaginative in their approach. The eBay initiative should act as a wake up call.

The truth of the matter is that the existing crop of TV antique shows are all much of a muchness. It is presumed that there are of course several thousands of marketers who make some money, thus giving them an additional income.

How to start your own Affiliate Program – Internet Marketing

This is how most entrepreneurs become filthy stinking rich! EVEN Ebay has an affiliate program!

The truth is its hard generating traffic on your own and if you want massive amounts of traffic this is the best way I know of. The great thing about creating your own affiliate program is you don’t have to pay a cent until one of your affiliates makes a sale.

However in order to get affiliates to want to promote your product, you do need to make it enticing for them. If you’re selling a digital product where you make basically 100% of the profits then your affiliates will be expecting a decent cut of the profits. After all, advertising can be quite expensive. It needs to be worth “their” while.

If your digital product sells for $97 ++ and you offer a 50% commission… your not going to have any troubles getting affiliates to sign on and promote your product (unless of course your salescopy isn’t up to scratch or your product has a bad reputation, I’ve seen that happen before).

Writing up your affiliate page and making it easier for your affiliates to promote your product will be of great benefit to you as well. After all, writing up email promotions, ezines, banners etc… is going to be a whole lot easier for you then what it will be for your affiliate because NO-ONE knows YOUR products as well as you do!

So how can you get an affiliate program?

Well there are quite a few options… Probably the most popular affiliate program would be ClickBank’s. Once you make your first sale (and they also give you the option of making the sale yourself) then they will index your site in their affiliate programs to promote. This gives you a large audience to find eager and waiting affiliates.

You can also get other affiliate programs that give you greater control and tracking, just do a search in Google for “Affiliate Software”
